General FAQ
Parish Records and Forum Help FAQ
This FAQ, short for Frequently Asked Questions, is a
compilation of the most common questions asked about the Parish Records
and Forum sections.
If after you have thoroughly read this FAQ and the
Help page,
done all that is suggested and you still have not resolved the problem,
send us a message to us via the Contact Us page on the Web site and use
the Help and Support - Parish Records and Forum
contact form. Give a detailed description of the problem you are
having, also quote any error messages you may have got. It is difficult
to advise, if you just tell us it is 'not working' or 'I can't log in'.

You can read all the past messages without doing so.
You will need to register if you wish to post a
message.

It could be that you made a slight error when you
typed your
e-mail address.
Our registration program creates the e-mail
immediately and it
should get to you quickly. Give it at least a few hours before you
decide it's not going to get to you.
If you waited a while and still didn't receive the
activation
e-mail, chances are your spam system, or that of your ISP is blocking
the verification e-mail our system sends to you.
If your e-mail program moves spam e-mails to a
folder other
than your inbox, check there first. Many programs do this - giving you
an opportunity to recover 'false positives' and 'whitelist' the address
for future use.
Check your spam system documentation, or help
system with your
ISP. You need to allow mail from the forest-of-dean.net
to get through.
If you have a Gmail account that you are using for
the
registration and you can't see a spam box for your Gmail, it is
accessible by first of all launching the Full Gmail in your browser and
it is in the left hand menu under 'More'.
You can also change the default to make it always
visible by:
settings --> labels --> unhide.
If you still do not get the activation e-mail from
us, you
will need to contact your e-mail provider as they are possibly falsely
blocking the e-mail getting to you and need them to 'whitelist' the
forest-of-dean.net domain.
If eventually you receive the e-mail and you have
not clicked
on the activation code link within 24 hours of first registering for an
account, the activation code will have expired and you will have to do
a new registration.
If after taking all steps that are suggested above,
you have
still not resolved
your problem, please go to the Contact Us page on the Web site and Use
the "Help and Support - Parish Records and Forum" contact form and we
will sort something out for you.
When using the Support contact form make sure you make
a note of the ticket
number which you will see once your request is completed.
If we can't reach you by email we won't be able to
tell you
that we can't reach
you and you will need this ticket number to go back to the form and
view
our reply.

The most likely reasons for this is that you entered
an
incorrect username or password.
Your password is case sensitive, you must use the
proper case
and make sure you have no additional spaces anywhere or you will be
unable to log in. Case sensitive means that upper and lower case
letters are looked at as being different. For example if your password
includes the letter "c" and you type it as "C" it will not be accepted
as being correct.
Ensure that your browser supports cookies; if so,
check the
security level you are using. High levels of security restriction in
certain browsers will automatically reject cookies. In order to use the
key features of these forums, you'll need to accept cookies.
If you have registered previously but have not
logged-in during the past 12 months your account will
automatically have expired and been deleted in order to keep the user
database up-to-date.
You can of course do a new registration if you wish
to use the
facilities of the membership again.
Additionally, with regards to logging in, sometimes a
cookie can get
corrupted which can cause problems, you will need to delete the cookies
stored in your browser and restart your computer before attempting to
log in again.
If you continue to have problems, go to the Lost
Password link. Follow the instructions and a new
Password will be generated and e-mailed to you together with your
current Username.

You may have previously clicked on the link and your
account
is already active or someone who has access to you e-mails may have
done so without your knowledge. Try logging in and see if your details
are accepted.
If you have not clicked on the activation code link
within 24
hours of first registering for an account, the activation code will
have expired and you will have to do a new registration.
If you have requested a new password and you have not
clicked
on the activation code link within 24 hours of the request, the
activation code will have expired and you will have to request a new
password.

If you are a registered user, all your settings are
stored in
the board database. To alter them you first of all must be logged in,

You can choose between date or last reply order
When viewing the index of postings, click on the Order
option where you can choose between by date of thread
or by date of last reply.
This means that the at the top of the page the
latest thread
that was started will display, or the thread with the latest reply will
display and they will then run down the page in which ever option you
have chosen.
How your forum view options are saved
The options such as Order, Fold Threads and View
are all kept
in a cookie which is generated when you first visit this forum and then
it is stored on your computer. What ever options you have last chosen
before closing your browser are saved in this cookie.
When you next open your browser and visit this
forum your
browser looks at the cookie that was previously generated and and you
will view the forum with the same options that you had chosen on your
last visit.
The above will only work providing you have not deleted the cookie from
your computer during visits. If your browser cannot find a cookie
relating to the forum when you return, a new cookie is generated and
the default values of the options are applied.

The Forum is set to show Europe/London time. This
means that
if you view the forum and you are not logged in,
all dates and times that you see on the postings are Europe/London time.

settings box. Here you can enter the time difference between your local
time and Europe/London time.

If you found you made a mistake after posting a
message, don't
panic as you can edit your own posts.
Just go back to the posting you made and open it,
then all you
have to do is click on the edit link which is at the bottom right hand
side of your message and make the changes.

Threads will lock automatically after 20 entries. The
reason
for this is because
when you are viewing the thread you will notice each reply is
progressively
indented further. If a thread, especially in 'Table View' mode has a
long title
is allowed to continued on for ever the title gets wrapped on to many
lines
which is difficult to follow and makes very unfriendly viewing.
Also, in most cases after 20 entries the contents of
the posts
have drifted away
from the original subject and what is being posted really needs to have
a new
thread of its own.
If you want to reply to a post in a thread that has
been
locked for this reason
then all you need to do is start a new topic with a different and
appropriate
title with reference to the old thread within the content of your new
message.
Threads will also be locked or deleted by Admin if
the
contents are inappropriate
or not relevant to Forest of Dean people and places.

When asking a questions, be as precise and detailed
as
possible. Please read our
Posting Guidlines.

You can get an email notification sent to you when
someone
replies to a message you posted, if the following box is ticked.
"E-mail notification if there has been a reply to
this message"
You will find this directly underneath the section
where you
type your message.

Click on your username which appears
underneath the title of any of your postings - when the message is open
and you are logged in. You will then see another link show
postings.
You can also do the same thing by going to the User
link near
the top of the page and locating your username.
