My Forest of Dean ancestors include John (1824-fl. 1881) and Sophia (Heaven) Ansley of East Dean, Isaac & Mary (Phelps) Heaven of Cinderford, and Thomas & Mary Bayliss of Mitcheldean. Their daughter Mary Jane (1860-1930) married William Ansley (1854-1928), who arrived less than 10 years later; they settled near Chariton, IA, as did William's brothers Thomas (1864-1886) and George (1869?-1949), and their sister Emma Hail (1850-1903). I also have connections (though not direct) to the family of David Clark (1814-1895) of Cinderford through his son Alfred (1861-1940), who married Eva Heaven (1872-1940). Todd W. Zimmerman |

| I have just returned from a visit to the Forest of Dean. The area is really beautiful and I had some great success in tracing my family from the area. I would like to thank the Forest of Dean Family History Society for all their assistance. A special thanks to Len and Megan Perry who went out of their way to help me. The families which I am researching are: EDY (EDDY) - From earliest record which I have found of Eddy's in this area are 1247. Where have all the Eddy's (Edy's) from the forest gone?? There are only a couple of them listed in the telephone book for the forest area. They did have large families and I think they have spread all over the world. If there are any EDDY's or EDYs out there whose families originated in the Forest of Dean, please get in touch with me as I am trying to put together a complete record of this family to current times. MEEK - Prior to 1709 when a Jane Meek married into the EDY family. I have traced two possible Jane Meeks born within a couple of years of each other and I cannot find out which is the correct one. HODGES - Mary HODGES married into the EDY family in 1745. There is no trace of her birth in the Forest area. She was born in 1716 per her death record. She could have been born in Herefordshire or elsewhere. HOBBS - Margeret Hobbs married a George EDY in 1678. I have not yet been able to trace her birth. Any help with any of the above will be greatly appreciated. Best regards Nolene Nolene Lossau |

| Thanks for the opportunity to leave a message. I'm new to the genealogy world which has, by the way, turned my life upside down. It seems that every chance I get, I'm glued to the PC searching for new paths to follow. I'm trained as well, as soon as I hear the wife, I get off this thing. Keeps me in one piece. Anyway, I'm interested in finding more WARRILOW/WARRILLOW'S. We seem to be all over the world. I've met some great people in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US. I haven't made any direct contacts to my pedigree, although there is a WARRILOW famly in Alberta, Canada. I wrote, but no response. Give me a jingle. Have a great one. dw David G. WARRILOW |

| When you visit the small village of Ruardean in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, the last thing you ask is Who killed the bears?. You see, the villagers there are still very touchy indeed about the whole subject, even though the incident happened way back in 1899. Basically, Ruardean inhabitants at first got the blame, but when the story really came out, it transpires that it was an unruly mob from neighbouring Cinderford who did it! The folks of Ruardean have never forgiven them. The full story, including the people who were charged for the offences of assault and of killing the bears, can be seen on: http://www.demon.co.uk/fweb/dean/towns/ruardbears.htm Rod Rod Neep |

| Here are some details of my WATKINS of Ruardean, Gloucestershire. I am descended from Esther WATKINS (b.1838) a daughter of John WATKINS (b.1811). Esther had 7 children, all presumably illegitimate as there is no mention of a father. All have the surname of WATKINS. Joseph (b.1867) my Great-grandfather is one of those 7 children. All this information has been obtained from various censuses. Of the 7 children, I have only managed to find a record of one birth, that of Oliver. On his birth certificate the fathers name is listed as John with no surname. I'm sure there is more to it than meets the eye, especially as the way illegitimacy was looked upon in those times, hopefully something will come to light in the future. | I am currently looking into my grandfathers family history. His fathers name was Henry Baldwin and mother Edith Smith. Henry was born in Drybrook approximately 1865 and Edith in Aston Ingham approx 1867 they were married in 1888 and had two childrn in the forest of dean before moving to Pontypridd sometime between 1997 & 1901 they had another child who was born in pontypridd and shows on the 1901 census. There children were Thomas 9 Born drybrook Florence 7 born drybrook George 3 born pontypridd My grandfather was born 14th May 1901 Andrew Baldwin. Edith moved to Leicester with my granddad some time in 1903. She told my grandad that he was from a big family and that all of his brothers and sisters were alot older so she had left them after her Henry had died in a mining accident. Some of these facts are untrue and not sure what is true. She died before my grandfather went to work in a workhouse in leicester. Up until he started work he believed that his name was Smith but when he needed to show his birth certificate he found out his name was in fact Baldwin. By this time he was unable to ask any questions and died not knowing anything much about his family history. I have managed to find out quite a bit of information but there are loads of Baldwin's and Smith's in the area. I would really appreciate if anyone knows anything about what happened to Henry Baldwin and his family so that we can piece together the truth. Please e mail me if you have any informtion Thank you julie bradman Leicestershire England Friday December 31 2004 |
