I visited the Forest in 1999 researching my great grandfather Alfred Hatton who was born in Coleford in 1837. It was such a lovely area that I would love to return and live in the Forest as my ancestors did.

Here are some details of my WATKINS of Ruardean

I am descended from Esther WATKINS (b.1838) a daughter of John WATKINS (b.1811).
Esther had 7 children, all presumably illegitimate as there is no mention of a
father. All have the surname of WATKINS. Joseph (b.1867) my Great-grandfather is
one of those 7 children. Most of this information has been obtained from
censuses.

Of the 7 children, I have only managed to find a record of one birth, that of
Oliver. On his birth certificate the fathers name is left blank. I'm sure there
is more to it than meets the eye, especially as the way illegitimacy was looked
upon in those times, hopefully something will come to light in the future.

I am trying to track down information on an ancestor of mine who was a forest keeper in the Forest of Dean. I cannot find a book that is late enough in date (from 1850s onwards) that would list him.
His name is William Christie and I think he was at Herbert Lodge. He came down from Scotland in the 1850s.
I believe there was another William Christie who was living at Kensla Lodge (could be his son).
I would be most grateful of any information or leads anyone can give.

Since my father recently died, I have re- visited several times and started to trace my ancestors back. I have discovered my ggfather Alfred Hulin married a Hannah Addis, both from St. Briavel [she was in fact from Lower Meen(e)? about 1/4 mile down towards the wye], but can't find any record of the marriage or banns for St Mary's Church. His parents, another Alfred Hulin, Married an Elizabeth Morgan from Tintern Parva, circa 1853. If anyone has any details or connections on any of these I would love to hear from them.

I am interested in the name MOREWENT. They were very prolific in Westbury-on-Severn, but I cannot locate any of
this name today. The married into the HYETT family which
seems to have deep roots in the Forest of Dean area.
I would like to hear from any families of these names.

I am looking for one William Ward and his spouse Sophia
(Maiden name unknown but could be Harris) my GGGParents,
who presumably lived in the FoD in early 19th C. All I know
of them is that there was a daughter Hannah born (c)1815, a
son Cornelius (my GGF) who was baptised on the 25 May 1828
in the Parish of Blakeney and Chapel of Awre and a daughter
Priscilla who was baptised on 3 Nov 1830 in Cheltenham
Parish Church. Sophia's place of birth was given as
Malmsbury, WIL in the 1851 Cheltenham census. She died in
1854. Hannah married Richard Stacey in 1834 in Cheltenham,
Cornelius married Sarah Ann Reeves in 1857 in Cheltenham,
but nothing is known of Priscilla's subsequent life. If any
memories have been jogged I'd like to hear from you.
Meanwhile good luck with all your researches.

2. Thomas Garland (Farmer) at Park Farm
3. William Garland (Farmer) at Cross
4. William Garland (Farmer) at Tump Farm
5. Samuel Garland (Farmer) at Lodge farm

Samuel Garland is my g-g-g-grandfather and I would like to find out more about the other four Garlands and their property.

I have traced my Dean ancestor only to 1850 in Pennsylvania on the census. John A. Dean, Wife, Jane(?) and 11 children. I would like to know where they came from. John was 45 in 1850, so he would have been born 1805. I am hoping to trace his family back to their origin, which was either England or Ireland. Thanks

Children may have been Adelaide 15 Cornelius 11 George 10 Mary 7 Julia 5 James 3 Joseph 1. I assumed they lived in Ruardean Hill or surrounds. The parents were probably about 40!! Walding could be Walden? Thanks for any assistance.

I am just starting out at this game (2 days), and have already come to brickwall. I have found my Great-great-grandfather, John Watkins who married Phoebe Avery(Every) in Victoria, Australia, in 1857. This is all the information I have, and would appreciate any help I could get.
I have already recorded 74 relatives with several cousins still to be entered once I find out their names or their parents names to make the links back to my Great-great-aunts.
I have found several relatives with links to Hotham, Victria, as well as several other Watkins born in Hotham, which could possibly be from sibblings of John. I was once told that one of my direct relatives swam the last few miles to Australia, after being shipwrecked of Wilsons Promontory, in SE Victoria, and the Watkins Family settled in the Kangaroo Flats/Bendigo area of Victoria. The branch I am part of, then pioneered the Thorpdale area in Gippsland, along with the Gunn Family, which I am also related to.

My maternal grandfather, from whom I seem to have inherited the genealogy gene, was Frank Step Hockaday. JONES of Chepstow. Trying to connect JAMES JONES and his uncle HENRY PACE, of this 1881 census of Gloucestershire, Cirencester or Stapleton. Jones and Henry's wife Matilda were from Chepstow. I'm trying to determine if they are the same people of the same name that are in Alberta Canada some 20 years later, HENRY died 1899 in Lethbridge and JONES lived in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Henry of Lethbridge had two sisters from Bristol around 1899.
Trying to determine the relationship of these chaps to my grandfather, Charles Vicarage Pace, who also died at Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1926. Also if the Henry of this census who had a father RICHARD. if Richard was a relative of the WILLIAM who married FANNY JORDAN of the Forest, and mentioned in last weeks queries.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
