Michael Blackwell in March 2000 left a message on here about the Morse family who owned coal deposits in Forest of Dean. I tried to e-mail him but address was unknown. I am researching George Morse born 1758 Awre with Blakeney. His will dated 1829 makes bequests to his sons, some of which are part shares in collieries, the Grove Engine Colliery at Whitecroft, coal work at Parkend called Catch Can and coal work at Speedwell, near Branducks Green. He was married to Elizabeth Davies. George was the son of John Morse and Margaret.

I am researching my family and have a real difficulty in tracing the parents of John Baynham who died on 16 February 1732 in Newnham. His tombstone is broken but states his age as 9?. There is a little poem on the stone which suggests that he was 97 years of age which suggets a date of birth of 1635. But this could have been wishful thinking.
His first recorded child Elizabeth possibly after her mother, was born in 1675 in Newnham. The next was a son called John in 1677.
He was clearly well educated but very poor.

Any help would be most welcome. I have been stuck here for a long time!!
A great webb site --Many thanks!!

I have found a reference to one Ephriam CHOULS who was christened at LITTLE DEAN, Gloucester on 23 Feb 1834. I think he would be too old to be my dad's father.

Hi from Vancouver Island, Canada. I am presently researching the Fryer family and boy, they are all over Gloucester, from Hartpury, Corse, Fretherne, Arlingham, Saul, Hardwick, Abinhall, just to name a few. It seems that the Fryer family was very prolific and kept marrying into the same families, Kings, Clutterbacks and Fryers. One day I may get them all straightened out. Is anyone there researching the Fryers? Maybe we can compare notes? Have a great day. Mona

I have just found a letter from my great grandfather, Russell Hardy Dean, in which he states that the Dean side of his ancestry is from Forrest (sic) Dean in England. I have found from other sources that he is descended from Richard Dean of Maryland, USA, circa 1730. Hello all!

I may be all wrong here, but, isn't there a village/town by the name of Elmore in the Glou. area?

I have been able to trace my ancestors only as far back as 1589, being born in England, location unknown. This was courtesy of the Mormons. (Thanks guys!)

Also, the first documented Elmore from my family was born in England, and arrived in the US, I am assuming near Virginia, as he died in 1725 in Richmond, Virginia.

The Elmore family didn't have much imagination when it came to names - all the men were Peter, William, Robert, Thomas, James, with Milton liberally sprinked in there. Case in point - my dad was named Robert Milton.

My dad was very very adamant that we were Scots-Irish. He seemed offended whenever I (as a young child) questioned what he based his belief on. It was family history, handed down.

As longevity runs in the family, I am the 13th direct descendant from Peter Elmore, who arrived in America in the late 1600's.

Can anyone shed some light on the Elmore name for me?

Thanks very much!

Karen Elmore, Louisville, Kentucky, which looks a LOT like Ireland!

I am researching my family history.

My grandfather, William Baynham, a colliery sinker, told me he was born in
Symonds Yat.

I have a copy of his marriage certificate which shows he married Elizabeth
Tomlins in the Parish of Arksey, Yorkshire, on 1st August 1907.

Elizabeth lived at the Bentley Lees Colliery Cottages, and William in Doncaster
Road, South Elmsall.

Both were then aged 20.

William's Father, Richard, also a colliery sinker is listed as deceased (could this
have been a mining accident? where would I find out?

Elizabeth's Father, also a colliery sinker was Joseph Tomlins.

Both families probably originated in the Forest of Dean area.

Do you have any references which could help me?

Could you suggest further avenues of research?

Yours sincerely,

I'm researching the Hale and Herbert families of the East Dean area of Gloucestershire. My ancestors were Nehemiah (bap. 1824, Drybrook) and Hannah Hale (nee Herbert), they were married in 1849 in Holy Trinity Church at Drybrook and lived in Ruardean Woodside. They had a daughter Julia (b.c.1849) who had an illegitimate son, Thomas 'Hale' reputed to be the son of ? Chivers, a local gentleman in whose home Julia was working as a 'charwoman' (1871 census). Hi!

I'm researching my greatgrandparents. I've found my
greatgrandmother's line. Her name was Mary Sophia Hail. She was descended from Thomas Ansley (1673-1731/2) I'm seeking information on my greatgrandfather's family. I have reason to believe that his ancestors also came from Gloucestershire. My ggrandfather's name was Alfred George Nunney. He was born in 1869 and died in 1954. Mary's parents emmigrated to the state of Iowa, USA. I don't know if either ggrandparent was born in England. Well, perhaps someone who reads this message knows of a source for me. Please notify me if the name Nunney rings a bell. Thanks very much!

If you have ancestors who came from Cinderford and surrounding areas of the Forest of dean, they may well have been connected with Cinderford St. John's Cricket Club. The Club was formed in 1880 by the choirboys of St.John's Church who were also pit boys. By the early 1900's Cinderford could boast fifteen cricket clubs but over the years these teams were absorbed into the only Cinderford cricket team remaining today.
I have compiled a history of the club :
CINDERFORD ST. JOHN'S CRICKET CLUB 1880-2000
it includes many team photgraphs together with stories of outstanding performances and recollections of past members.

Copies price £5-00 are available from all Forest of Dean bookshops or just send me an email and I will put one in the post for you (no charge for p & p)

Where is Hinder's Lane?

Does anyone know anything about the brutal murder of a Mrs Cox by her husband in Little London, during the mid to late 1920's. These people would have been my great grandparents. There is some mystery surrounding this as there is only one family member still alive and she refuses to speak of it. It seems that he spent the remainder of his life in a secure hospital (Broadmoor?)

I am researching into the pubs of the Forest of Dean and I have become confused over the duplicity of name of the Britannia Inn in West Dean parish. The first reference is to a Britannia Inn which was owned by Amos Smith in 1891 and then ran by Henry Hawkins in 1903. The brewery supplying the pub then was John Arniold of Wickwar. The second reference is to a Britannia Inn owned by the exors. of Edward Fox in 1891 and Frederick George Fox in 1903. The pub was a freehouse and the recorded landlords are John Kirby in 1891 and Frederick George Fox in 1903. I know that there are at least two pubs in the forest with that name. The Dog and Muffler at Joyford was once the Britannia, and the Britannia at the crossroads at Coalway. But which pub relates to the original records. Does anyone have any information on the Voice / Voyce family? Names I want to find out information of are; Jesse Voice 1848-1914 & Clara Voice 18??-1926,
Minnie Welllington-sister? or close family member of Frederick Voice, married to William George Wellington circa 1900s. Lived at Bell house in Bryony Magor Newport, Monmouthshire.
Very much interested also in the Poulton family - Alice Maud Mary Poulton (aka Nancy) born 4 February 1883 at 27 Bessborough Gardens, Westminster, London. Born to Hannah (formerly Caley) and Alfred Frederick Poulton.
Second wife of Frederick Voice - married in New Zealand 1915. Mother of Alfred Frederick Voice born 1/12/1906 London vicinity (father Frederick Voice - illegitimate birth), baptised St Agnes Church, Kennington Park, London 12 February, 1911.
Can anyone provide any update in regards to the Poulton family. Present time - related to the above, or in general about the names previously mentioned.
Albert William Voice 1846-1908 (born in East Dean Gloucestershire) and Donna Lucretia Voice (of Chile) (formerly named Garduier?) 1850?-October 1875 (in Colonel, Chile). Died unexpectedly - in unknown circumstances. Any one able to tell us more of this!? We are very interested in any information about her family background.
Children - William Albert 1872 and Frederick 1874, both born in Chile.
Please be in touch if anyone can offer any kind of information.

Can I introduce you to my website www.gloucestershirepubs.co.uk which is a detailed study of the old public houses and breweries in the county. Eventually I aim to locate all the beerhouses that traded in Gloucestershire from c.1850.The names of landlords are given which should be of interest to genealogists. The website is in its early stages and the list of pubs in the Forest suffers from the large parishes of West and East Dean where the names of several pubs are duplicated and no locations are given. Your help would be appreciated. For example, I know that the Dog and Muffler in Joyford was once the Britannia Inn but there are more than one reference to the Britannia... the other being in Coalway. Which was which? Any help would be appreciated.

Great site!! My husband's ancestors lived in Maisemore and Ashleworth. Family names are ETHERIDGE, GOUGH and PARTRIDGE, Partridge being from Gloucester City as well. We
have Hannah Etheridge, b. 1811, Maisemore, marrying Thomas Partridge, b. 1815, Gloucester, with children born in both towns. Hannah's parents were Benjamin Etheridge, b. 1769, Maisemore, and Hannah Gough, b. 1771, Ashleworth. Her parents (according to IGI)were Robert b. 1736 and Hannah Gough. Robert b. 1736 to Joseph and Mary Gough, and Joseph b. 1706 to William and Anne Gough. Finding the right William and Anne is difficult......places and dates don't match up! And we have no information about Thomas Partridge's parents at all, though there are numerous other Partridges in the 1851 census. Any information or clues would be most welcome.....please e-mail with any help!

Am very interested in finding out about Coal Mining in the Forest of Dean. My ancestors Richard GREEN and his father in law, William PHILLIPS were Coal Miners. Richard GREEN married Elizabeth PHILLIPS in Newnham in 1867 and soon after had their first child, Albert P GREEN (my GG Grandfather). This is really wierd because I clicked on the Watkins because of my paternal grandmother Nancy Elizabeth Watkins Thompson who goes way back into American history and came up with the Forest of Dean, which is the home of my mother's family the Shadrack Hughes family, who were free miners and were from the Forest of Dean Glouchester. In fact, my cousin Mick Miles and his brother, have purchased the family house that my maternal grandfather, Leslie Hughes grew up in in Glouchester. They, as free miners, had their own mine at that estate. Anyway, I could really get into this. Please respond. Carol Thompson Ryan

Arrabella Porter b. 1827 Eastdean
Mother of:
Maynard Porter b. 1861 Eastdean - Coalminer
John Porter b. 1865 Eastdean - Coalminer
Pricilla Porter b. 1869 Eastdean
Lived at Westbury on Severn - Plump Hill

Maynard married Ann Hawker b. 1860 Gloucester
(I know that she was born on a barge -
I have a photo of her as an old lady)
Children:

Fielding Thurza (g.grandmother) Clara Precilla Mansfield Arnold Rosina Gwynne.
The whole family moved to Chilvers Coton by 1901.

John Porter married - he and his family stayed in East Dean Plump Hill.

Any info on a) Pricilla Porter b.1869 Did she marry?
b) Ann Hawker b.1860 Parents siblings?
