Anyone in/or originally from the town of Mitcheldean, Gloucestshire, who knew the Merry family. My father was Austin James Merry and emigrated to Canada, he last visited his home in 1969. I believe my grandfather was William Merry and was married to Charlotte or Lucille Smith or Smithe. My father was one of five brothers and one sister, their names were Dorothy, Cecile, John and not sure of the other brother. My father's one brother emigrated to Africa and a cousin emigrated to Australia around the same time he came to Canada in 1928 or 1929. My father, Austin James (Jack), was in the Canadian Army for several years before WWII and during WWII was stationed for a short time only 20 miles from his parents in 1939. I have an older brother, Austin Hugh Merry who lives in Kingston, Ontario and a sister, Noreen Charlotte McCallen in Toronto. Please send any information however small. Thanks, Carole McDowell (nee Merry)

Updated message. My Genealogy Home Page is now http://www.genealogy.com/users/m/o/r/Ken-S-Morse. In there you will find a tree tracing the MORSE, COOPER, BAILEY and SHERWIN names back to the early 18th century. If you click on the tree and enter F you will see a list of hundreds of names connected with my family which originates from the Forest. If you double-click on any name the relevant portion of the tree will appear. If you right-click on any individual, and select 'Properties' you will see personal details or make that person the Primary Individual. Try it!

Would appreciate comments or questions. I have more background information on many of the names. Check out the photographs too!

I know you all might find this pointless but i currently live in the Forest & find it a very quiet & peaceful area (with or without the sheep). Iv lived her since Oct '88 (born 1986). I class it as home (my home is on the Whitecroft rd of Bream looking on over towards Whitecroft, Pillowell and Yorkley you can also see some of Cinderford) even though i dont orginate from the Forest. But if i cant find any where outside the Forest to live i will probally live here for the rest of my life. I find the views from Plump Hill very preety (overlooking Gloucester & Cinderford) & i would probally buy a house in the middle of the wood there as its so quiet. All in all the Forest of Dean is a lovely area & shouldnt be spoilt by people building houses everywhere it damages the view.

Remembering about 50 yrs ago being taken 40 miles from Blaenavon to a doctor in St Bravails, the only doctor my grandmother would trust. I think he was Dr Nanda, probably from India. I have often wondered how he set up in St Bravails - might be an interesting story.

I am researching two families in particular from the Forest of Dean. My Edwards family has its origins in Newent (1770's) but later Staunton, and Lydbrook. The family is extensive, with branches being located in New Zealand, United States, Western Australia and NSW.

My Howell family originates from Newent (1770's) and later from Lane End, Coleford. Three branches have been identified as emigrating to NSW and Victoria.

I have uploaded web sites for both of these families and should any interested parties wish to obtain further information or the web addresses, I may be contacted on the email address provided.

There is a John Elton born to Francis & Betty (Woodcock) Elton in Kempley, Glouc. about that time. They had a rather large family. My Great Grandfather, James Gildroy or Gilderoy, was supposed to have been born in Newcastle, Northumberland, England. He worked as a sinker in the mining industry in the Forest of Dean. There he met my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Watts. They supposedly eloped in 1863 and came to the U.S. a year later. I'd appreciate any information on both of them.

In Slater's Directory of Gloucestershire-Coleford, 1852, I was pleased to find my Great-Great Grandfather's name, John Watts, jun., Whitecliff. I have been in contact with 2 descendants who live in the area, but I have wondered if the Watts Pottery is still there. Also, I've heard that the home of the potter of Whitecliff is now a bed and breakfast. Is this true? Please forward any information on this family and the questions above to me. My distant relatives haven't been able to answer these for me.

Sincerely
Clara Weil

Searching for information on BARNARD family in Forest of Dean area in the 1800's. Would like to learn date of birth, name of parents, name of wife for John BARNARD who died in 1879, leaving behind a wife and many children (Clement, Job, George Arthur, Beatrice, Flora, Theophilus, Naboth, John Mathias, and Arthur). The story we hear is that this John Barnard's father was known as the strongest man in the area and killed himself in a wager by carrying sacks of heavy corn up a steep hill.

Hello there

I have just started my family tree, which seem to originate in Hereford. Then today my mother gave me some information that she had. And I wondered if anyone can remember this person who was my Nan's brother.

The funeral of James Gladwyn took place at the Hereford Cemetery. From:
Hill View
Chess Grove
Long Hope
Gloucester
Service conducted by Rev P Wood
James joined the Welsh Fusiliers at 17, and served in Ireland, India, Malta, France and Italy. Awarded the DCM and the IMV in Italy he was presented with a watch by the King of Italy.
He was severely wounded and was in hospital for 2 years. Discharged for medical reasons.
Jim worked as a forester in the Forest Of Dean. When WW2 broke out he joined up with the Suffolk regiment and held rank as acting Major.
He was a keen member of the garden club. A member of the Ancient Order Of Foresters Friendly Association being Chief Ranger.
A brother: Captain Joe. H. Gladwyn retired and sister Mrs Marion Wanklin survived him

Joe and Jim were both foresters. I would really like to know where they both originate from.

Very easy site to navigate

Regards Kathy

Children of first wife, Mary KNIGHT, were Edwin born 1816, Henry b 1817, James b 1823 and Mary Ann b 1826 the former three all emigrating to New Zealand with their families. Children of second wife, Margaret OWENS, were Ann b 1829 and Thomas b 1833. Thomas and family were still living in Monmouth in 1881. Thanks for replying but you did not give me your e-mail address so I could not mail you with any details. My great uncle went to England around 1900. He was born in 1892. He went as a groomsman to a place called Wantage. He married and had sons, one of them also called Michael who was on the beach at the battle of Dunkirk. I think they eventually moved to Bath but we have never heard anything from them. He was the only son of Michael Bannable and Ann Hyland and had sisters Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, Catherine and Emily (my grandmother) He was the youngest of the family. Looking for any information re Thomas Blake/Roseanna Morgan who were noted in the Ruardean census of 1851 along with their six children. Their daughter Ellen Blake married Albert Walford, and the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1876 aboard the Waitara. Samuel Charles Walford (Ellen and Albert's only son) was my grandfather. He was born on 6 May 1875 and his birth was registered in Newnham. I have the New Zealand information, but have hit a brick wall on the English connection. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Wiiliam Thompson and Joe (b 1839). Joe was also a stone mason. Joe turns up in 1864 in Wolverhampton where he lived with his wife Matilda Gardner.Only know for certain of one son Frank, my husbands grandfather. Love to know if there were other children.

Looking for anyone who may be a relative to my Grandfather Albert Mansell who I believe was born in Cliffords Mesne Gloucestershire. He married Caroline Louisa Woolford who came from Purton Wiltshire. Mr Grandfather worked for Great Western Railway as a Signalman. He worked for sometime at Ledbury Station Herefordshire. They moved to Worcestershire. They had 4 children Fanny (believed to have been born in the Ross on Wye area in 1899) Arthur, Nancy and Mary.
I would be pleased if anyone who may know of any living relatives of the above to contact me on my e mail address.
Thanks

My mother's family (Wickenden) came from the Forest of Dean (Blakeney). Her father William Edmund Burroughs-Wickenden was born in 1873. His father William John the 6th was a farmer who lived at Nibley Mill Farm, Blakeney. His father, Rev. William John Wickenden was a poet (sponsored by Dr Jenner - of smallpox fame - to become a Rev. His father was another William John and they all seem to have been in and around Blakeney for a few long time. Regards to all. Marilyn Griffiths

Gran had 2 brothers, Viviene and Kevin and 1 sister, May. I know that her mother also lived in Kilcot but she died when I was young and I don't remember her very well. Hello

I am beginning to research the Hancocks family from Bream and the Warren family from Drybrook.

George Hancocks was born c 1895
Elizabeth Warren was born c 1898

They married c 1918 and had eight children - all of which I have details. It is George and Elizabeth's parents I am interested in.

Any clues?

I was born in Gloucester and am currently researching my family tree. My mother's grandfather, William Bundy, was a bricklayer, born in Corse, in 1831. I know a few things about this side of the family e.g. he married Emma Phelps, b.1835, at the Parish Church, Hampsted, Gloucester in 1855. I also know his parents: my great great great grandfather was also a bricklayer, born in Corse in 1781, one George Bundy (d.1860), and his wife was Ann. I am trying to find out if she is the Ann born in 1813 who died in 1895 (in Corse).

Any helpful info much appreciated!

I have just published a book Baynham, A History of the South Carolina Family which includes historical information on the Baynham family who originated in the Forest of Dene. The book also includes genealogy from William Baynham who was transported to the colonies in 1718 through the present Baynhams of South Carolina. The book is available through Barns and Nobles and Books A Million, Internet service. If you are interested, pull up either store on your Internet service and type in the author spot - Nancy Fulmer Baynham. I also have a complete genealogy chart of all South Carolina Baynhams plus the lineage back to the William Baynham of 1718. This chart which is 52 pages long is available from me at cost ($6.00 including mailing). I have been researching Baynham history for about 25 years and find it very fascinating.

I am aware of Stinchcombes living in Stinchcomb Parish and surrounding areas, but I am curious as to whether a Stinchcomb ever lived at Piers/Peers Court in Stinchcombe or at Stinchcombe Manor in Stinchcombe. My feeling is that the name is so very old that their holdings were taken from them or they lost them in some way long, long centuries ago. So long ago that the loss predates the Doomsday Book. Berkely Castle or Manor is also there at Stinchcombe, but what could be origin of the Manor be? It was not originally built for the Berkely family line. Who built it? The same questions for Owlpen Manor.
Your attention to these questions is greatly appreciated.

With regards to an earlier message I posted on this page,I have more details that I am looking for.My Great Grandfather,FRANCIS HENRY GEORGE MEEK,born in East Dean,1904.His father was JAMES MEEK,not Thomas Meek,as I originally thought. He was married to EMILY MEEK.I think that James had a brother called THOMAS MEEK. I would also like to trace A LAVINIA MEEK,who witnessed the marriage of FRANCIS MEEK,back in 1927.The Meek family, who were all Miners, lived in a big house way out in the FOREST, miles from anywhere. There were alot of people living in the house at that time. They moved down to Caerau,South Wales back in 1911,when my great granfather was 7 years old.Apparently,JAMESand EMILY MEEK moved back to NAILSEA,BRISTOL,later in life.
I would appreciate any information however little.
Many Thanks.
