| Since leaving a message on here a few weeks ago, I have been innundated with email from various people in Africa, saying they are representing some bank or other financial institution, and that they have money left in some sort of account that I may have an interest in... even though none of my family have ever been to Africa let alone left money there. Is anyone else getting bombarded with this junk mail? I'm trying to narrow down where these people have got my email address from. Angela Gregory Monday, November 11, 2002 at 21:37:41 |

| There is a story that has been handed down through the family which I am having difficulty reconciling: At some time during the 19th(?) century. a family called BAKER owned a mining company in the Glos area (believed to be The Forest of Dean). The property was bought out by the BOWER family, on the understanding that the name of Baker would be perpetuated through their children. Elizabeth Bower married Robert Prosser and all their children (and subsequent descendents - including my own children) have the name Baker as one one their christian names. Can anyone help me to throw any further light on this? Here's hoping! Great website, by the way - I have bookmarked it for further visits. Susan Prosser (Mrs) Hythe, Kent UK |

| I am a self-publishing editor from Shrewsbury. My mainstay is my father (who left me in 1996 - but he left me 750,000 words about all his Dorset parishioners between 1948 and 1982). They have sold 13,000 books world-wide, and there is a genuine genealogical interest since each person is recorded not statistically but with a short paragraph of lively prose. In the new book which I am doing, Mike Greening of Shrewsbury has traced his family back to Awre, Gloucestershire and into Bristol, Warrington, Canada, Australia and even into the Mauri Greenings. It is a unique collection of family memorabilia in a style that is eminently readable, even for a non- Greening. Please contact Mike Willmott on 017430-343718: I prefer real talk! Michael C.B. Willmott SHREWSBURY, Shropshire U.K. |

| I'm researching a COLEMAN family about whom I know very little (yet!). My cousin's grandmother was Grace Evelyn COLEMAN (1902-1982). Grace's father was Ezra COLEMAN, a painter, more commonly known as Bill. He was married twice, nobody remembers the name of his first wife, his second wife (Grace's stepmother) was Harriett. Oral history has it that Bill was from Gloucester. In the 1881 Census I found what appears to be our Ezra as a 7 year old with his family in Leckhampton, Gloucester. This Ezra's father was also Ezra COLEMAN, also a painter, aged 30, born in Mitcheldean, Gloucester. (The only other Ezra COLEMAN in 1881 was more of an age to be her grandfather and was living in Leicester. I have a photo of our Ezra in about 1910 with his young family and he looks to be in his early 40s at the most, the other would have been about 60 in 1910, and his children's names and ages don't fit with Grace's daughter's memories). So, off to the 1851 Census, where I found Ezra Coleman, age 8 months, born Mitchel Dean, living with parents Elizabeth and Henry Edward COLEMAN and 7 siblings who were born in Forest of dean or Mitchel Dean. Henry Edward COLEMAN is a Surgeon in General, born Westbury onSevern. Looking around on the internet I found Henry Edward (surgeon) mentioned in a Pigot's Directory of 1842, and Ezra, painter) mentioned in a Morris & Co Directory of 1876. Does anybody know anything about this family? I'm researching this for a favourite cousin, not my direct line, and don't want to start buying certificates (rather expensive from Australia) until all other avenues have been exhausted. I feel pretty sure that this is Grace's family but maybe somebody out there with more knowledge can prove me right (or wrong, as the case may be!) before I go any further. Many thanks. Loretta Thomas Melbourne, Victoria Australia |

| Hello, First of all this is a great place to search and share ideas. I am totally lost with my search. I have a young man John ( vahan) VAUGHAN who would have been born about 1619 and moved to the Americas settling in Rhode Island in 1638. | Hello: Checking the internet for genealogy and Johannesburg, I came across your contact. I'm hoping you might be able to provide a bit of advice. Both of my parents are of German ancestry. On my mothers side the family name is Schiller, which is fairly easily searched. Somewhere down the line, I believe, William Schiller (the author of William Tell) is a relative. However, my fathers side is much more mysterious. As I understand it, he was the son of a ruling German monarch, equivalent of a Baron, in the area known as Silesia, which I believe covered parts of Poland, Checkolvakia, Austria. I believe our family name was Johannesburg and his family maintained three castles named: Johannesburg, Wildesburg and Lundesburg. My father died a number of years ago, and the above, sketchy as it is, is about all that I have to go on, although my mother might have more info which I can find out about when I get to Calif. in about 6 weeks. However, I am now in Europe and have the time to visit the land of my father if I can find out more about it. My father did say that everything is on record in Vienna, but I presume in German. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might find out more concerning the above. Regards Richard (Dick) Johnson Richard Johnson Tamanu, Tahiti French Polynesia |

Timothy was the son of John (1779-1832) Smith & Mary -----, John was the son of Edward (1753-1829) & Mary Elley, they were of Newland. | Hello, I am searching on info on my great grandmother, Alice REED. She was a British Home Child... this is what I know... Alice Reed was born on Dec 31, 1884. She was in an orphanage called Painswick Emigration Home, also known as Washwell House in 1889. Alice at age 4 was sent with her 11 year old sister Lucy to the Marchmont Distribution home in May 1889 via the SS Sardinian and was escorted by Miss Leech, a matron of the home. Note: on the passenger manifest it said that the last name was difficult to decipher...so I am wondering if the last name was misspelled. A nice man from England sent me a census from 1881 that shows a family named READ (not Reed). The census is from Gloucestershire and the age of this Lucy fits the Lucy Reed I have... and they were born in the same county as they were when they were in the Painswick Emigration Home... Also...isn't Westbury on Severn, Cindrford and Painswick all fairly close to each other? If so, chances are the READ family listed below could be my ancestors: Dwelling: Bilson Green Census Place: (Westbury On Severn) East Dean, Gloucester, England Source: FHL Film 1341609 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2522 Folio 111 Page 11 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Charles READ M 42 M Yate, Gloucester, England Rel: Head Occ: Genl Lab Emily READ M 47 F Filton, Gloucester, England Rel: Wife Fanny READ U 10 F Cinderford, Gloucester, England Rel: Dau Occ: Scholar William READ U 8 M Cinderford, Gloucester, England Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Lucy READ U 2 F Cinderford, Gloucester, England Rel: Daur Edwin READ 3 w M Cinderford, Gloucester, England Rel: Son Sydney READ 4 M Cinderford, Gloucester, England Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Samuel BUTT U 45 M Stroud, Gloucester, England Rel: Boarder Occ: Packer (Fact Lab). The next question is, does anyone have an census reports from before or after 1881 that would show me a path to Charles Reed?? Emily Reed's maiden name is not listed...so I was hoping to find a copy of their marriage certificate or a birth certificate for Lucy Read. Any ideas??? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. So far I have written to Barnardo's, as they supposedly have the children's records of Marchmont Distribution Home, requesting any and all records of Alice and Lucy Reed. Thanks in advance for any ideas or clues... Sincerely, Elizabeth Durbin St. Louis, Missouri, USA edurbin79**hotmail.com Elizabeth Durbin St. Louis, Missouri USA |

From the information I already have on the Elley family from Newland, I know that an Emma Worgan gave birth to a son called Benjamin who was christened on February 4th 1869, the father's name was Richard Elley. Can anyone enlighten me on who Emma Worgan was, what happened to her? I have already visited Christchurch and found the headstone of Mary Ann Elley, b.1836-7, who married Richard Elley in 1864, was this the same Richard Elley? | Hello, I'm trying to track down information related to my great grandmother Emily Jane Beach, who originated from Parkend. I was fortunate enough to get onto the 1901 Census on New Years Day and found that she was born in 1872 (+/- 1 year) at 4 Park Square. Emily Jane Beach married (I think, but I can't find the marriage record at FRO, London) my grandfather Richard Thomas and then lived in Abercanaid, near Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. They may not have been married, but they lived together and had 7 children (William, Roy, Naomi, Charles, Louisa, Robert & Harold). Through information from family, Emily Jane's birthday was 21st or 22nd Feb 1872. I have a birth certificate that matches these details and a Parkend address, but she is named as Emily Beach (not Emily Jane Beach). Her mother is Louisa Beach and the fathers details are unknown, so I'm not 100% certain this is her birth certificate. Any information about the area would be useful. Thanks in advance, Andy Jones Andy Jones Crawley, West Sussex UK |

| I've been trying to trace my grandfather but he seems to have covered his tracks very well. I knew him in Montreal Canada as Edward Roberton 1899-1983. He told me he was from England where his brother Alfred lived and that he'd come over to Canada by ship with his mother around 1914. We think his parents were Samuel Shearing and Alice Weil. (No explanation for the name change though.) When Samuel Shearing died in England his wife Alice remarried in Canada (to a Mr. George Gregg). I can't confirm any of this however. We think Alice Weil had a sister Clara Weil who moved to Australia in the early 1900's and a brother Augustus Weil. Their parents were Augustus Weil and Ann Nevins. Again all of this is oral history and I am at a dead end. I have no documents at all. I'm hoping that if Clara Weil did move to Australia somebody out there knows her family and can point me in the right direction with this side of the family geneology.
