| I was evacuated to Drybrook from Birmingham during the last war to live with relatives. Family research highlights two surnames - Bright and Chivers - mainly from the Westbury and East Dean areas. The Chivers line is very well documented and originated from Somerset. There were a lot of Brights and knitting the line together is proving to be interesting but difficult to be conclusive. About six years ago I took the opportunity to visit Drybrook and was dismayed at its run down appearance compared with a five year old war time memory of the area when the farmer ironmonger grocer/milkman were all related and one of the daughters was married to the Drybrook village constable. The Chapel was very well attended for Sunday services. The county council officer I spoke to agreed that it had become run down but more important was that the local rugby team was doing well. | my 89 year old father would love to connect with any relative of Charles NELMES my great-grandfather who emigrated to Springfield Massachusetts USA in 1870. I have very little written info to go on and am actively following up the US leads but have also done some looking in Gloucestershire. Charles said his parents were James and Jane that he came from Sharpness Berkeley. I have found a Charles son of James and Jane baptised in Abenhall (Abinghall) in 1845 which is about the right date. (all written records give different birthdates!)and wonder if there is a Forest of Dean connection. His brother Phillip N(ehemiah?) also came to Mass. A son visited England in the early 1920's and in a postcard refers to visiting the folks in Shapridge and Cinderford . Charles married Mary (Ann) Drew also of Glos daughter of John Drew and Mary James. This is my first message to any group and know I probably don't have enough info but would love to find a connection for my father. C N Beattie Wilmington Delaware USA Saturday November 15 2003 |

| My ancestor's name was Ann Probert and according to oral family history she came from Red Rock Farm Monmouth England. The 1881 census tells us she was born in 1825 or 1826 at Coleford Gloucestershire. According to her marriage certificate her father's name was James Probert. The 1841 census lists a family headed by a farmer James Probert at Scowles Coleford. Could this be Red Rock Farm Monmouth(shire)? Ann is not listed as living with this family at this time. The children of James Probert listed as living with him in 1841 were John 26 Sarah 10 and Mary 18. The rest of our oral family history is as follows: Ann Probert met her future husband James Henry Webster in Brazil South America. She was 'staying with' the family of the owner of a fleet of 'Tea Clippers' whom we know only as Sir Charles. James Henry Webster was on one of the ships that called in at the seaport. Their granddaughter Ida said Ann married James and sailed with him for a year before settling in Liverpool England. They were married at St. Michael's Church in Liverpool March 23rd 1850(maybe for a second time?). I have had a researcher look through the records in Gloucester and there seems to be no record of our Ann Probert. Can anybody shed any more light on any aspect of this story? Where was Red Rock Farm? Where is Scowles? Does anybody know anything about this Probert family there? Does anybody know of any other James Proberts who could have been her father? Who was Sir Charles? Where exactly in Brazil would she have been and why was she there? Was it common for a young woman to go to Brazil to 'stay with' the family of an owner of tea clippers? Are coming from Red Rock Farm Monmouth England and having been born at Coleford Gloucestershire contradictory? Where was the boundary between Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire in the 1820s - the same as it was until 1974? Thank you very much. William MacCallum Ontario Canada Monday November 10 2003 |

My Father was born in Coleford and came to N.Z. almost 80 years ago. He still has vivid memories of the area and still corresponds with family members. I personally am very proud to have the Forest roots and have found in doing my research that it has been very rewarding and have found out so much about my heritage especially the Silurian Race of whom my Father is especially proud and it certainly stirs something deep inside me. | I have compiled the following which are the 'holes' left in my attempts to find Forester ancestors. If anyone can help then I shall be very grateful. My sincerest thanks to those who have already sent me info. I have given Location - Names and dates and family members where possible. MATHERN Mons. William GUNTER = ELIZABETH abt 1827 James. December 9 - 1828. Joseph September 19 - 1830 Died March 17 - 1861. George. October 5 - 1835 Charles June 25 - 1837 John April 11 - 1840 LITTLE DEAN Glos. James WILLIAMS = HARRIETT abt 1825 Esther bn. March 29 - 1839 COMMENTS:- She married Joseph GUNTER in 1857 Lizzie bn. in 1858 COMMENTS:- Joseph died March 1861 & was buried at Tidenham. Esther listed as a Pensioners Widow on her subsequent marriage to my GGG G/Father William Litten EDWARDS as follows. WOOLASTON. William Litten EDWARDS = Esther Gunter Sept. 16 1861. Walter Jan 6 - 1862 all born at Woolaston George Jan 17 - 1864 William Apr 4 - 1866 Alice May 5 - 1868 James Aug 8 - 1870 Lucy Dec 17 - 1871 COMMENTS:- The 1871 Census shows the family living at CHOP HOUSE Woolaston where William is listed as a pauper. Does anyone know where this was? The 1881 census shows them living at a place called 'CLAP Y YATTS' Tidenham. Which I believe is a row of three houses near Stroat. Am I right? Esther must have died by then as William is shown as a Widower. Can anyone add to these details? Jim Scott Yeovil UK Monday August 18 2003 |

| Hello All I'm researching my Charles family history and was wondering whether anyone has access to the 1866 1871 and/or 1891 census for the Forest of Dean area. I've found my family on the 1851 and 1881 census but need to fill in the gaps in between. My great great grandfather William Charles was born about 1837 and in the 1851 census was living with his widowed mother Ann and siblings Henry James Hannah and Elizabeth at Old Croft. William married Maria Jenkins in 1857 and they were both resident at Viney Hill at that time. By 1881 they were at Yorkley with their young family...children were William (15) Henry (13) Ann (11) Thomas (my great grandfather age 9) Samuel (7) James (3) and Hewbert (8months). If anybody can shed some light on this family in the 1861 1871 or 1891 census (William and Thomas were lodging in Wales by 1891) I would be really grateful. Many thanks. | Can anyone help me fill in gaps in my family tree? My great grandmother was born Julia Ruth Hannah Sandford in Lydney 1863. Her parents were Richard Jordan Sandford (born Lydbrook) and Maria Whittington and they married in Lydney in 1857. Julia is on 1881 census as a cook in Barnet Herts. On 1891 census she is now called Ruth single and in the workhouse in Cardiff having her apparently third illegimate son. My grandfather was her first son (born circa 1885) but I cannot find his birth registered anywhere. In 1901 she is in Chepstow still single as Ruth Sandford now with 4 sons. She finally married late in life and died in Pontypridd in 1945. Any ideas how I can fill in the details of her life in the 1880's - did she return home to Lydney? Her grandfather was James Sandford married to Elizabeth Jordan and he accidentally drowned in the canal in Lydney in January 1840. There was an inquest - does anyone know any more? What a colourful lot of ancestors I seem to have! linda stewart bedford england Tuesday May 06 2003 |

| I have been tracing the family of my Great Great Grandfather who's name was Elijah Robinson and his wife Charlotte Harding. He was the son of Elijah Robinson and Maria Dilworth. Although Elijah junior's family remained in the Midlands (except for a few years in the 1850's when two of their children were born in Whitecroft) - Mearce Coppice Parish of Kingswinford Staffordshire - all but one of his surviving Brothers and Sisters moved to Gloucestershire. I have them placed in and around Lydney. Elijah Senior's wife (Maria)died in Lydney and I presume is buried there. She was living with one of her daughters Eliza Pearce at Oakwood Foundry. Her other daughter Pheobe Camery is also living in Oakwood as her husband was working at the Oakwood Foundry. Their son James Robinson is a Railway Clerk married to Martha Brown and their other daugher Sidonia Haddock I have placed on the 1881 census a Widow living at Newerne as a Grocer. There is a death recorded at Chepstow for a William Haddock in the September quarter of 1875. I am interested in any information relating to these families. Also I would be interested to find the reason for their move to this area. Were there members of earlier generations already there perhaps!! I have been trying to find somebody who can help me place a Sarah Greenman born about 1780 she was in involved with a Thomas Smith and they had a child Walter Thomas Greenman born Cowley Glos However Sarah did not marry Thomas Smith and kept the Greenman name Sarah did marry a John Davis 17 Nov 1811 in Newland. Walter Smith Greenman married a Susanna Rees in Newland on the 24 Feb 1838 and the Greenman family grew to be a very large family a lot who were born in the Cinderford area and married into famalies such as the Simmonds /Organ/ Bird/ Beddis Griffiths/Waldron and many others The main thing is to find out which branch of the Greenman family does Sarah Come from. I have a very large amount of family history going back to the 1600 I did send for a copy of Sarah & Johns marriage certificate hoping to find the name of her father which wasnt there. So if there is anybody out there can help me with Sarah or with information on any other names i have mentioned please e-mail me. Ken Greenman Todmorden. | I am looking for my Husbands GrGrandfather Frank Williams (yes I know Williams is an extremely rare name!!!! <g>). He alleges in the 1901 census that he was born in Coleford in the Forest Of Dean abt 1874. Apparently according to family lore the family were farmers but a number of Franks brothers went on to become Doctors supposedly in the Swansea area. How true this is I'm not sure All and any clues are much appreciated Joanne Corless Lancashire UK Friday February 07 2003 |

| Hello I descend from the Charles and Cooper families. My Dads side are the Charles's and my Mams side are the Coopers. Both these families were from the Forest of Dean and moved to South Wales for work in the coal mines. I'm not sure of the exact dates when these families moved to South Wales but it was my great grandfathers that were born in the Forest Of Dean (My grandfathers were born in Wales) My great grandfather on my Dads side was Thomas Charles born 1872 in Yorkley. His father was William Charles born about 1837 born West Dean (says Old Croft on 1851 census). He married Maria Jenkins. Williams siblings were Henry James Hannah and Elizabeth. Williams mother was Ann and I'm almost sure his Dad was Henry Charles. I think Henry was born in Lydney and married Ann Thomas in Newland in 1828. On to my Coopers. My grandfather and great grandfathers Cooper were born in Wales but my great great grandfather Enoch Cooper was born in the Forest of Dean (Maybe Cinderford) about 1822. Enoch was the son of Griffith Cooper and Margaret Morgan. There is a possibility that this line of Coopers can be traced back to about 1683 thanks to other researchers and the Latter Day Saints website. Hope somebody can connect to these families. Thanks. | My query is about a waterwheel I think in a red? shed that I remember in the early 1940s that was down the Blakeney Straights. It was on the opposite side of the road to the area now called Wenchford where the brook crosses onto that side but it was not actually on the brook but on a presumble water race that would have been fed from the dam further up Blakeney brook on the Wenchford side. If anyone can give me any information on this wheel and what was it's purpose they will satisfy a long outstanding question in my mind. I now in my 70s played there as a child so it really is a long standing query. Ken Faull Perth West Australia Sunday January 26 2003 |

| I am looking for relatives of the Rabenowitz family. My grandfather was born in the Forest of Dean possibly Cinderford in the 1880's. His father Meir was a jeweller. His mother's name was Charlotte nee Lorie. My grandfather's name was Michael Joseph he had a twin brother that died at birth. His sister's name was Rae and his brother Harry changed his name to Robinson. My grandfather emmigrated to Johannesburg South Africa in the early 1900's. My grandfather known as Joe had two sons Lorie and Ronnie and a daughter Ruth. All are now deceased.Ruth lived in the UK and may have had contact with family members. She lived in Surrey. My sister's and I are trying to trace our family's roots. I saw the name Myer Rabenowitz on the internet and wonder if this could be part of our family? I have seen the name spelled this same unusual way on some internet sites in the USA and will follow up on those too. My cousin Eril(nee Rabenowitz) has just given me some information which may contradict the above. She has found a copy of our grandather's birth certificate. Born 23 Nov 1882 Alma Street Newport Town. We are not sure how this relates to other information. The spelling of his father's name appears to be Myer Rabenovitch and his mother Charlotte Lauri. I would appreciate it if any one knows these people and would contact us.
