| I am currently looking into my grandfathers family history. His fathers name was Henry Baldwin and mother Edith Smith. Henry was born in Drybrook approximately 1865 and Edith in Aston Ingham approx 1867 they were married in 1888 and had two childrn in the forest of dean before moving to Pontypridd sometime between 1997 & 1901 they had another child who was born in pontypridd and shows on the 1901 census. There children were Thomas 9 Born drybrook Florence 7 born drybrook George 3 born pontypridd My grandfather was born 14th May 1901 Andrew Baldwin. Edith moved to Leicester with my granddad some time in 1903. She told my grandad that he was from a big family and that all of his brothers and sisters were alot older so she had left them after her Henry had died in a mining accident. Some of these facts are untrue and not sure what is true. She died before my grandfather went to work in a workhouse in leicester. Up until he started work he believed that his name was Smith but when he needed to show his birth certificate he found out his name was in fact Baldwin. By this time he was unable to ask any questions and died not knowing anything much about his family history. I have managed to find out quite a bit of information but there are loads of Baldwin's and Smith's in the area. I would really appreciate if anyone knows anything about what happened to Henry Baldwin and his family so that we can piece together the truth. Please e mail me if you have any informtion Thank you julie bradman Leicestershire England Friday December 31 2004 |
| Regarding my message dated 28 Dec 2004 about Thomas and Mary Blanch-Cook looking at some more info i have come across they would most likely have only been known by the surname Cook.Thomas married Mary Ann Critchley on 21 Sept. 1885 at St. Pauls Church West Dean at the time of his marriage he lived at Lane End and worked as a labourer. His mothers name was Harriett Cook his step fathers name was Elijah Blanch hence the double surname.I cannot find Thomas s birth anywhere. On his marriage certificate there is no paternal fathers name i know from his age at time of marriage that he was born 1862.Ihave a copy of his mothers marriage certificate when she wed Elijah Blanch that was 31 Oct.1863 also at St. Pauls Church Thomas would have been 2 years old. Harriett came from Pillowell and her fathers name was John Cook he was a labourer.Elijah Blanch came from Lane End he was also a labourer his fathers name was William Blanch and he was a Quarry Man.On the 1901 census Thomas and Mary lived at Bakers Hill Coleford and Thomas now works as a Stone Quarry Labourer.I have a copy of Thomas s Death certificate he died 31 oct 1901 at home at Bakers Hill aged just 39.Thomas s wife Mary also came from Coleford her fathers name was James Critchley he was a Quarry Man.I hope this extra info helps .All my relations on my fathers side came from Glouc.Other names i am researching are Nelmes from Victoria St.Youngs from Newland and Smith from Bream. Looking forward to some more info if anyone out there can help .Regards Ann Ann Clark Essex England Wednesday December 29 2004 |

| I have little to go on but I was told I was English and Irish. My maiden name is Dean while my paternal Grandmother's maiden name was Nance. One source told me Nance was English not Irish and that it is really Jannance. In your searching perhaps you may find some of my ancestors that came to the USA...but I don't know when they came. I know my Dad's Dad came to Stephenson Michigan and the family stayed there until moving on to Menominee MI. and then Escanaba MI. which is where I was raised. My great grandfather Richard Baynham was born in Littledean House of Correction Forest of Dean Gloucestershire on 17th August 1851 where his mother Elizabeth Baynham then aged 40 was serving 2 months hard labour for stealing 83lbs of bark from the Forest ãThe property of her gracious majestyä Queen Victoria. She was living at Bentley Lees Colliery Cottages Arksey. Her father was Joseph Tomlins Sinker. Witnesses were Lee Tomlins and Annie Tomlins. My grandfather then a pit sinker was living in Doncaster Road South Elmsall. He lived in the village for the rest of his life which ended in 1959 and ended his mining career as colliery shaftsman at Frickley. My father was Joseph Richard Baynham and he had three brothers William George and Leslie. Iâm particularly keen to find out about the Tomlins side as I know nothing apart from what is in this email but I would also be keen to hear from any Baynham connections. I know my great grandfather Richard Baynham wasnât in Yorkshire until after 1878 as he was serving three months for malicious wounding in Gloucester gaol. He was in Derbyshire in the 1881 census and appears in the 1901 census as follows: 1901 Census: Richard Baynham 46 Born Gloucester. | We have been researching the Grindell ( Grindall Grundell ) family who are a fairly small clan with two or three distinct clusters. The majority were in East Yorkshire but there was a concentration around the Forest of Dean area. I don't know very much about this family and would be really interested in speaking to anyone who has researched them. (In some areas including some people living here the name was also spelled Grindle). We are slowly connecting up the branches and it would be a great coup if we could link this one to the Yorkshire one (we can dream!) Regards Mandy Mandy Walker UK UK Tuesday September 07 2004 |

| My grandparents William BAYNHAM and Elizabeth TOMLINS were married at the Parish Church Arksey on August 1st 1907 when both were given as aged 20. She was living at Bentley Lees Colliery Cottages Arksey. Her father was Joseph Tomlins Sinker. Witnesses were Lee Tomlins and Annie Tomlins. My grandfather then a pit sinker was living in Doncaster Road South Elmsall. He lived in the village for the rest of his life and ended his mining career as colliery shaftsman at Frickley. He died in 1959. Living at 34 York Street West Melton Brampton Bierlow Hallamshire Yorks. With: Judith Hawkins Baynham (wife) 43 born Belper Derby Richard Baynham (son) 17 born Eckington Derby Thomas Baynham (son) 16 born Kiveton Park Yorks William Baynham (son) 15 born Kiveton Park Yorks John Baynham (son) 14 born Kiveton Park Yorks Charles Baynham (son) 9 born Alnwick Northumberland Annie Baynham (daughter) 8 born Hickleton Yorks George Baynham (son) 6 born Hickleton Yorks Florence Baynham (daughter) 2 born Broomhill Wombwell Yorks Richard Baynham died shortly after the 1901 census and I believe is buried in Brampton Bierlow with his son Richard who died in April 1902 in a boating accident on the River Don. My great grandfather Richard Baynham was born in Littledean House of Correction Forest of Dean Gloucestershire on 17th August 1851 where his mother Elizabeth Baynham then aged 40 was serving 2 months hard labour for stealing bark from the Forest of Dean ãThe property of her gracious majestyä Queen Victoria. The Tomlins are a different matter as I donât have any information on them at all. If any of you do have a connection with or information on these families or their descendants please get in touch. | Hello I am interested in any information concerning George Pearson LEEDHAM (variously spelled LEADHAM LEIDHAM LIEDHAM) and his family. According to what little records I have the family emigrated to Australia around 1841 from the Forest of Dean. I am a great great great granddaughter. George who was born around 1805 in Gloucester was apparently a charcoal burner farmer. He married Maria STIVENS (renamed STEPEHENS) on the 20th August 1825 in Newnham Gloucester. His eldest daughter Leah Lydia Leedham born in the Forest of Dean is listed as an assisted passenger aboard the ship Agostina which arrived in Port Phillip on the 17th December 1841. I suspect the rest of the family were also aboard the Agostina but I do not have access to the original passenger lists and current indexes do not list them. The family moved to Tasmania for a short interval before settling in Echunga South Australia in 1846. I would appreciate any information and would be delighted to make contact with any other relations. Thank you Rhonda Lindsay Tasmania Australia Monday July 12 2004 |

| Hello FoD listers. I have been researching my great grandmother's family Jane Ann COMPTON (nee WOOD) and find that although some of the births (eg William & Jane Ann & Ann) are recorded on the 1851 and 1881 censuses William and Ann living in Brain's Green and Jane Ann's birth is recorded (BMD Westbury on Severn) for 1860 and in 1881 she is working as a parlourmaid at a girls boarding school in Cheltenham Willliam's birth c. 1851 doesnt seem to be recorded neither does Ann's c. 1874 who is identified as a granddaughter aged 7 in 1881. William is shown as unmarried in the 1881 census and so is Jane and I cant find any more children who might have produced a grandchild for William & Elizabeth (nee Powell I think). Could Jane have had a child when she was aged 14/15 and left her with her parents when she went off to work in Cheltenham? | I am researching JENKINS in the Forest of Dean area. In particular I am trying to trace the father and family of my maternal great grandmother Sarah Hannah Jenkins. On the 1891 census she was living in Staffordshire with her parents Shadrach Jenkins coal miner (b. 1832) and Sarah (b. 1827) and brother William (b. 1868). All give place of birth as Lidney Glouc. Sarah is aged 19 on the census but gives her age as 21yrs a few months later at her marriage. In 1881 census Shadrach and son John Jenkins (b. 1857) both coal miners are lodging in Staffordshire and give their place of birth as Bream Glouc. There is an entry at Bream Woodside for Sarah Jenkins and daughter Sarah H. Sarah's occupation is coal miner's wife. I believe that coal mining was on the decline so Shadrach went in search of work in the Stafforshire coalfields. I am trying to find more details of Shadrach and Sarah eg their marriage to find out Sarah's maiden name also parents/siblings of both. Other Jenkins in Staffs are William Jenkins (living with Hannah HYATT CHARLES) Charles Jenkins and Morgan Jenkins all born Forest of Dean. Any info or possible connections would be welcome. | My great grandmother Phoebe Morse was born around 1838 in West Dean the daughter of John Morse and Damaris Bailey. Her grandfather was George Morse who died 1828 and who left several coal workings including Grove Engine Colliery coal works at Parkend called Catch Can and a house adjoining Holly Patch Yorkley to his sons. One of his sons George Morris Morse left Yorkley in the 1860's with his family for New Zealand and there are descendants there. Another son Richard born 1811 was known as a poet in the Forest and his granddaughter was the acclaimed Australian actress Essie Jenyns. It is such an interesting family I am wondering how many more Morses I am connected to yes I know the name Morse is as common as Jones in Wales! I am thinking of writing a book based on my research and am asking any Morse memers who think there may be a connection to contact me and I could send them an updated gedcom file with all the 'Down Under' relations on.
