| I am researching the family of brothers James and Richard Hawkins of Berry Hill. My grandfather Albert was the grandson of James. Also I have come up against a brick wall!! Albert's mother Harriet Ann who was born in 1848 was unmarried at the time of his birth in 1887. She is listed on the 1901 Census as Harriet Hawkins. When my grandfather emigrated to America in 1909 Mrs. Harriet Morgan Five Acres is listed as next of kin. This is all I know of my g-grandmother! Can anyone suggest how I might go about finding her death certificate?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you. Cynthia Hawkins Wood Uniontown Pennsylvania U.S. of A. | Researching my THURSTON relatives from Wales who apparently cut and milled timber in the Forest of Dean during the 1910's and early 1920's. Am interested in a) contacting anyone who might have that name in their own records (family lived in St. Agnes then in Sidmouth Sidford and Bickewell Valley in Devon) and b) can anyone direct me to a historical description of the Forest of Dean and finally c) this may be a really not smart query but is the Forest of Dean the same as the Illogan Forest? Thanks all. J. Crozier Edmonton Canada Wednesday February 09 2005 |

| Reposting to correct my email address. My 90 year old father would love to connect with any relative of Charles NELMES my great-grandfather who emigrated to Springfield Massachusetts USA in 1870. I have very little written info to go on and am actively following up the US leads but have also done some looking in Gloucestershire. Charles said his parents were James and Jane that he came from Sharpness Berkeley. I have found a Charles son of James and Jane baptised in Abenhall (Abinghall) in 1845 which is about the right date. (all written records give different birthdates!)and wonder if there is a Forest of Dean connection. His brother Phillip N(ehemiah?) also came to Mass. Philip visited England in the early 1920's and in a postcard refers to visiting the folks in Shapridge and Cinderford and mentions going to London with Reuben . Charles married Mary (Ann) Drew also of Glos/Here daughter of John Drew and Mary James. I know I probably don't have enough info but would love to find a connection for my father. | For quite some time I had a ãbrick wallä with my great grandfather Richard Baynham. Iâd found him listed in the 1901 census aged 46 with his wife Judith Hawkins Baynham (also a brick wall which has recently crumbled) and family. It says he was born in Gloucestershire but I was never able to find any record of a Richard Baynham born around the right time. Then I started looking in the Gloucester gaol records and found Richard Baynham aged 25 of Coleford committed to Gloucester Prison on 22 April 1878. Right age could this be him? My next inspiration was to look in the Gloucester Journal held on microfilm in the Gloucester Central Library. In an unusually comprehensive report of the trial tucked away near the end was this nugget: ãPrisoner asked D.C.C. Chipp to speak for him. Mr. Chipp said that the best he could say for the man was that he was not dishonest. He had the misfortune to be born in Littledean prison and appeared to have been mixed up in rows all his life. Foresters were in the habit of getting him to fight for them.ä I was then able to look at the records of Littledean House of Correction and found that one Elizabeth Baynham had been sentenced to two months hard labour for stealing bark from the Forest. The Matron's Journal 1849-54 shows Elizabeth on light duties washing/cleaning. 16th August 1851 admitted to infirmary 17th August 1851 Confined of a male child. 30th August Discharged this morning her conduct very good. Iâm still having problems getting further back but have found her family she was a Rosser and her husband James aged 46 (born in Lea Bailey). That was in the 1851 Coleford census. Now all I need to do is find a record of his birth parents etc.... That's my new brick wall. Any ideas? Frank Baynham Forest of Dean England Sunday January 23 2005 |

| Hello everyone - For a couple of years now I have been researching my family in my case the Beach tree and branches. Although my family have not moved very far they tend to criss-cross between the Monmouth town area South Herefordshire and the Forest and that ads to the work when searching One thing anybody researching the same areas may need to know is that births etc. for most of what is often called West Dean are registered in Monmouth and if you are looking for family in the Forest along the River Wye in the area below Ruardean you may find some registrations in Ross. Now my main family is BEACH and I have collected quite a lot of info the earliest entry is 1545 for the will of Joane Beche of Newent in the next 60 years first the a is added to the name and later the e on the end removed. Beche came from de la Beche a family that arrived in the years after the Norman Conquest though they were not Normans but Flemish and came from an area on the French / Belgium border beche apparantly means spade not very grand. Cheers Fred the Spade always happy to help out with Beach info Robert Fred Beach Forest of dean UK Friday January 21 2005 |
