George Welch was variousely described as, Servant, Labourer also Coal Shipper. They lived firstly in Newnham and later in Awre. They seemed usually to have a boarder staying with them, a notable one in 1871 being a young curate, George A. Allen Curate at Awre. They had one daughter, Emma who married Thomas Church, a marine Engineer, they eventually went to live in Bristol, where George joined them after the death of Harriet.
