Morse Family 1890s

Morse Family 1890s

Taken in the 1890s it shows William Morse (1829-98) and Priscilla Morse (1835-1921) and their large family.

After her husband's death in 1898, Priscilla Morse (nee Clay) a true matriarch, ran the 'Victoria', a well-known local off licence, grocer's and lodging house in
Ruspidge. Travelling sales people from all over the country would often stay there. It was the hub of the local community.

Her son Richard Morse, who married Laura Yemm, was an overman at Lightmoor Colliery, owned by the Crawshay family. They were my great grandparents.

*Richard Morse is in the centre of the back row in the picture.
