Dollie Yemm

Dollie Yemm

Photo of Ada Blanche “Dollie” Yemm. The photo is captioned "To Mother with love from Dolly & Baby Peter, Cheltenham, Nov 1913". A later inscription, apparently for the benefit of Dollie’s son, Leonard, reads "When your Mom was nurse at Dr. Williams's." The 1911 Wales Census shows Dollie, age 21, in service as a nurse/domestic in Carmarthenshire, Wales, for the family of David Williams, a surgeon. Baby Peter was not yet born. (Dollie sometimes spelled her name with a “y” and other times with “ie”.)

Dollie Yemm was born at Carterspiece in the Forest of Dean on February 23, 1890. She was baptized at the English Bicknor Parish Chapel on April 13, 1890. She was the youngest child of Esther (Cooper) Yemm and Richard Yemm. She immigrated to America in 1916, joining her sister Esther and brothers Joe and Steve. Soon after she arrived, she married Thomas Meek, son of Alfred and Lucy Meek, who had also come to America from the Forest of Dean. Dollie died in 1935 when she was 44 years old.
