BLAKENEY, with the
tithings of BLEDISLOE, ETLOE and HAGLOE, is an ecclesiastical parish formed in
1853 from the parish of Awre: it is 3½ miles south from Newnham, 4 miles
north from Lydney, 15 south from Gloucester and 120 miles from London, on the
Gloucester and Chepstow road, 1½ miles from the river Severn and 1½ miles from Awre station on
the Gloucester and South Wales railway, in the Western division of the county,
hundred of Bledisloe, Westbury-on-Severn union, Newnham county court district,
rural deanery of the North Forest, Gloucester archdeaconry and Gloucester and
Bristol diocese.
The church of All
Saints is a plain modern stone building, and consists of nave and porch with
small belfry and 1 bell. The
register dates from the year 1813.
The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £442, in the gift of the
HaberdashersÕ Company, and held by the Rev. Alexander David Pringle, M.A. of
Caius College Cambridge. Part of
the manor of Ruddle is in this parish.
There are Baptist and
Congregational chapels.
There is a steam
flour mill belonging to Mr. Stephen White, who also carries on a considerable
business in the corn trade.
Fairs are held on May
12th and November 12th yearly for cattle, sheep
&c.
The soil is clay and
loam ; subsoil red sandstone, shale and limestone. The chief crops are wheat and roots.
HAGLOE is
a tithing and manor, half a mile south-east. The Queen is lady of the manor.
ETLOE is a tithing three quarters of a mile
west.
BLEDISLOE
is a tithing, 1½ miles north-east.
This tithing with Hagloe an Etloe, takes its name from lows, or barrows,
which are still to be seen. J

The principal
landowners are The Crown, Mrs. Jones, Underdean, and Russell James Kerr,
esq. The area of Blakeney is 430
acres, and of the parish of Blakeney and tithings is 3,856A 1R 14P.; The rateable value is returned with Awre ; the population in
1871 was 965.
